See any similarity between the images above? If you answered yes, that’s probably because you have eyes and a functioning brain. In the latest chapter of corporate retailers stealing from Atlanta-based artists, Tori LaConsay says she painted sign on the left in late 2008 as a sort of love letter to East Atlanta Village. Just this week, years after LaConsay’s selfless act of sign-painting, she started getting emails from friends who had seen her message again, except this time emblazoned on H&M products. I guess they learned their less— oh wait, nope. Still assholes.

This Is Bad News, People
I just learned that the Jittery Joe’s Roaster and Tasting Room downtown is going to have to relocate because a Wal-Mart and other chain stores want to build on that land. This is the best smelling and tasting place in the city to study or grab a cup of coffee! Also.. it’s beautiful and old and awesome… my 3 favorite adjectives. Also… a great place to take photos! The coffee! The graffiti! The coffee! The wooden floors! The coffee!

From Jittery Joe’s Facebook: Unfortunately, the rumors are true… The Jittery Joe’s Roaster and Tasting Room will be leaving its current downtown location early next year. We are saddened by the decision our community leaders have made to remove, rather than restore and preserve the character and potential green space of that area in favor of yet another Wal-Mart and other chains. Downtown Athens is a rich, vibrant, charming area of our county and we want to keep it as such. While we agree that revitalizing and growing to meet the needs of the area is important, to sacrifice small businesses in favor of more apartments and chain stores is the wrong move.
We encourage you to contact your commissioners and voice your opinion! As always, thank you for your support!

Looks like the owner of the land decided to sell to a developer. Anyone know what we could do to help stop this from happening?
EDIT: Sign the petition here! (Thanks Kgarv)

We are not against development of the Armstrong-Dobbs tract. In fact, we celebrate development for the opportunities it might bring our community to grow. However, we are against the placement of a 90,000 sq. ft. Wal-Mart within the Armstrong-Dobbs development as an “anchor store.” Please sign this petition to voice your support for an alternative vision of Athens’ future. We protect our small businesses. We love our unique culture. We are People for a Better Athens.

Automatic reblog. I was sad when the Jittery Joe’s at Five Points moved from their original building, but at least that was self-imposed. This is just too much. I’m signing this petition from 2,729 miles away.

Did you make it to The Goat Farm for our Halloween party? No? Well, let’s just say that this video from @NoahOCulver (fellow Circus grad, holler!) pretty much sums up the night better than words, or pictures, or stories, or any recount other than actually being there could.

Pretty proud of my pal for pulling this off for us. Cannot wait ‘til next year.

New bicycle lanes coming to downtown Atlanta
Creative Loafing reports today on some exciting news foralternative transit intown:  new bicycle lanes are planned for downtown Atlanta along part of the route of the upcoming streetcar:More bike lanes, sharrows coming to downtown
A quote:

Edgewood’s existing bike lane — which currently begins where the future streetcar line ends — is scheduled to extend a half-mile west all the way to Park Place Avenue, with additional “contra-flow” bike lanes cropping up on Jackson Street and Auburn Avenue. According to a spokeswoman with the city’s department of public works, the lanes are scheduled to be completed by spring of 2013.

It’s not mentioned in the article, but I hope that the Edgewood Avenue bike lane is extended eastward on a route that connects with the Beltline path. It would have to connect on another road since Edgewood passes over the Beltline as a bridge.
